Tanning Lotions 101…
At Sun Daze Tanning Studio, we are dedicated to offering our clients the most up-to-date, skin-healthy tanning products on the market. So we have teamed up with the number one tanning lotion manufacturer in the country to provide you with those products: Australian Gold, Sweden Beauty, and Designer Skin.
Tanning lotions can do many things to help you keep that tan longer, help you achieve it faster, and to get your deepest, darkest, healthiest tan possible. If you aren’t using tanning lotions, then you should because you could be giving up to 30% or more of your color!
Accelerators
These are products that provide the necessary ingredients for melanin (melanin is what your skin produces that turns from pink to brown during the tanning process) production and are most effective when applied right before UV exposure. All of our bronzers, tingle products, and blush products have accelerators as well, but each has their added benefits.
Bronzers
There are two types of bronzers. Immediate bronzers are botanical extract additives that accelerate the tanning process by producing an instant bronzed color to the skin and enhancing an already established tan. The color will last approximately 24-48 hours.
Dihdroxyacetone (DHA) bronzers react with amino acids in the skin to provide a suntanned appearance. This type of bronzer is not recommended for someone who does not have a base tan. You should wait 4-6 hours before showering to ensure the best tan possible, and the color will last 7-10 days.
Tingle Products
These products increase microcirculation and impart a warm “tingling” effect. The microcirculation appears as a red flushing color that occurs due to the increase of blood flow to the skin and will temporarily color the skin. We do not recommend that beginning tanners use a tingle product, and never use tingle products on your face.
Blush Products
Blush products react with the skin similar to the tingle products but without the “tingle” effects. You will not have as much reddening, but we still do not recommend that you use the product on your face.
Sunless Products
For those customers that are not able to tan with UV light, we offer many sunless options such as Mystic Tan, California Tan, South Seas, and Amber Sun sunless products.
Tan Extenders
In addition to offering great tanning lotions, we also offer a wide range of after-tan products to help you keep our tan looking healthy and lasting longer.
FAQs
Is it safer to tan indoors or outdoors?
When outdoors, you are tanning in a completely uncontrolled environment, where factors such as time of day, reflective surfaces, geography, season, UV index, weather conditions, and the ozone layer can lead to overexposure. Indoor tanning is like a prescription, as the amount of UV light is controlled to maximize tanning and minimize burning.
Why should I use lotion?
Indoor tanning lotion is lotion specifically designed to be used in tanning units to help you maximize the enjoyment of your tanning experience. There are many advantages to using specialized indoor tanning lotion.
Save You Time – Moisturized ski tans faster. Our indoor tanning lotions work as accelerators to speed up the tanning process.
Save You Money – You get better tanning results in fewer sessions.
Save Your Skin – Moisturized skin is healthier. Indoor lotions help counteract the drying effects of the heat and light associated with tanning. At SunDaze Tanning Studio, we carry a large variety of premium skin care and tanning products proven to reveal deep, rich tans and unveil superior skincare results.
Do I really have to wear eyewear when tanning?
YES! Our eyes don’t have the capacity to produce melanin for protection like our skin does. UV light can irreparably damaging to your eyes. Without the right eye protection, you are taking the chance of developing loss of color perception, poor night vision, macular degeneration (complete blindness except peripheral vision), cataracts, and permanent eye growths like pinguecula or pterygium.
What are the causes of white spots?
White spots have several causes, so it’s best to check with a trained tanning consultant for verification of your particular situation.
1. Pressure Points – are seen on skin surfaces that contact the equipment such as shoulder blades, tailbone area as well as on the back of the calves and upper arms. They are caused by lack of blood flow to these areas due to the pressure created by the body. This is easily minimized by slight movement in the tanning unit during the session or by several sessions in a stand-up unit. Most of the upgraded units at iTAN Studios have contoured acrylics that help minimize these pressure points.
2. Tinea Versicolor – or “sunspots” is dandruff-like fungus that flakes off the scalp onto the upper body. The affected areas prevent the skin from tanning and create white spots. This condition is very common and has nothing to do with cleanliness. Selsun body shampoo is often used to treat it.
3. Vitiligo – is irregularly shaped white patches of skin that do not tan. It is caused by a condition that causes melanocyte cells in the affected area to degenerate and die off. Your physician can help reverse the effects of vitiligo.
Myth vs. Fact
MYTH: There is no such thing as a safe tan.
FACT: Actually, you could say that it isn’t safe to totally avoid the sun. The benefits of regular sun exposure far outweigh the risks of overexposure, which easily can be minimized by merely avoiding sunburn. Research shows that regular, moderate sun exposure might actually decrease your risk of getting breast, colon, prostate, and ovarian cancers as well as osteoporosis or ever Alzheimer’s disease.
If you’re a woman, you are 69 times more likely to die of breast cancer. And the Vitamin D you receive from ultraviolet light, which cannot be replaced in your diet, may inhibit the formation of internal tumors, including breast cancer.
MYTH: In order to get a suntan, should I burn first?
A sunburn does not fade into a tan. Sunburn indicates UV-overexposure and actually damages the skin, leaving it inflamed, red and dry. Always practice moderation when tanning indoors by using the proper recommended exposure times for your skin type as well as proper sunscreen protection when tanning outdoors.
The Positive Effects of the Sun
Of course you love the way you look with a beautiful tan, but did you know that regular exposure to UV light could help you live a longer, healthier life?
“Heliotherapy” – Defined as the treatment of disease and other disorders by exposing the body to sunlight. Dermatologists have prescribed Heliotherapy as a treatment for acne, eczema, and other skin disorders.
It is recognized that sunburn and long-term UV-overexposure can cause premature aging of the skin and skin cancer. However, there is no proof that moderate tanning is harmful. Rather, the science of Heliotherapy supports the idea that regular, controlled exposure to the sun offers many health benefits including:
- decreased blood pressure
- lower blood cholesterol
- increased tolerance to stress
- increased resistance to infections
“The Sunshine Vitamin”
When exposed to the UVB portion of sunlight, the skin produces Vitamin D, also known as The Sunshine Vitamin. Vitamin D makes it possible for the body to absorb calcium and other vital minerals from your diet that play crucial roles in the life-long development and maintenance of healthy teeth and bones. Vitamin D and sunlight together significantly influence your body, everything from lowering cholesterol to preventing cancer.
Light Increases Longevity
Sunlight provides us with the vital nutrients that have the power to increase our longevity. Sunlight enters the body through the eyes and skin, affecting virtually every cell in the body. It is not surprising that sunlight can be used as a natural remedy. Through the prevention of such diseases as breast and colon cancer, and the stimulation of white blood cells to fight other diseases, the invigorating sun can actually help us live longer and healthier lives.
Light Affects Over 100 Bodily Functions
Light plays a crucial role in the regulation of over 100 bodily functions. The pineal gland, located deep in the center of the brain, receives light energy exclusively through the eyes, and coordinates most of our life sustaining functions based on the light information that it receives. Sunlight keeps the body’s systems in balance; everything from the immune system to fertility.
More Positive Effects…
Exposure to sunlight has been found to help alleviate some symptoms of Premenstrual Syndrome, such as mild depression and mood swings, irritability, physical discomfort and social withdrawal.
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a mood disorder caused by sunlight deprivation that is extremely common in the winter months when the days become shorter. This condition has been successfully treated with exposure to UV-light.
